Comfort in the Womb

This is an imaginative painting about the beauty of existence of a fetus inside the womb.

The mechanism on which an actual human being grows and develops inside another human being seems like an absolute miracle to me.

Perhaps the mother's womb is the most secured and comfortable place for a baby where it can eat, play, sleep and potty at its own pace. There is no one watching them and giving disciplinary instructions as how to behave after coming to this world.

It seems as though a specially designed bed of petals with the refreshing surroundings of water body across it, is custom-made for the little one to feel like a king or queen of its own kingdom.

The musicals vibrations of the outside world and the physical movements of the mother perhaps create bubbles of messengers that travel in the form of fish to the baby and give them a slice of life outside the womb.

Motherhood

Motherhood is a divine feeling where perhaps, for the first time, a person cares so unconditionally about someone else.

There are innumerable changes going on inside the body and mind.

The formation and growth of the little one seems like a small bud gradually growing into a creeper and spreading across one's entire being.

In this painting I have tried to depict motherhood in its purest form - flourishing in natural surroundings.

Family Tree

This tree consists of multiple cells that indicate the growth and expansion of a family.

The patterns of these cells suggest a window grill through which the tree is seen.

And the leaves and branches emerging out of the patterns on the window grill symbolise the formation of a human being’s life cycle.

Just like my dress

I have been intrigued by the coniferous tree or the Christmas tree (loved by all kids) ever since my childhood.

A recent visit to Bursa, a hill station in Istanbul - surrounded with ice-clad coniferous trees brought back the memories.

This is an imaginary scene where a little girl is delighted by the similarity of the shape of her dress to the frills of the tree.

Hold out until Spring

My recent trip to Istanbul (Turkey) inspired me to paint landscapes all over again. And especially the different shapes and forms of trees there caught my attention.

This unique form of a drooping tree left a lasting mark on my mind. It gave me the feeling of holding together all our positive energies despite the downward graph of events in life.

It's just a few days before spring, and life will blossom once again as the law of nature. The lesson I learnt from the experience is - to stay calm, patient and grounded during various phases of life.

A few years back I had done a series of paintings on the 'patterns of nature'. I feel like re-inventing the same concept with a blend of my recent line of thought in a few paintings ahead.

Cracking the Codes - 2

This painting is an extension of the last painting - 'Cracking the Codes'.

Here a boy of six-seven years of age is trying to cope with the difficulty of his transition from a kid to a grown-up boy.

He is gradually understanding the benefits of growing up - that he can do things with greater speed, balance and understanding than before. But he also knows that it will take a while to perfect them.

Being treated as a grown-up by the adults has developed a desire to show a matured approach with his activities and habits. But the partial inability to achieve it has raised many questions in his mind.

The patterned clusters of bricks and pebbles on the floor tiles depict the mental turmoil within the boy.

The toy car symbolises his eagerness to go ahead on the journey to a new phase.

Cracking the Codes

Growing up as a child must be so difficult!

Right from interpreting reality using basic senses such as sight, sound, smell, taste and touch - to interpreting forms such as numbers, alphabets, colours and shapes - life must be challenging for them every moment.

I think this struggle for identification may be similar to the experience of a lay man viewing an abstract painting. While the elders can easily make 'sense' of scribbled letters or routine sounds - children may feel 'lost' trying to understand and then decipher the meaning of each patterned element around them.

This painting depicts the battle of a two-three year old with her own understanding (of say numbers and alphabets) - shown against the backdrop of a symbolic painting - that has patterns of an abstract painting.

Peeping Toms - 2

This painting comes up with a different perspective on the same concept of the earlier painting - 'Peeping Toms'.

Here, we the viewers are peeping from the interior to the exterior surroundings, with the pattern of grills in the foreground and the street scene in the background.

Whereas, the last painting took us to the interiors of the building from an exterior view; where the human activity was in highlight and the patterned architecture served as the backdrop.

This painting may remind you of 'Pointillism', but here the dots depict distance, air and uniformity of colours and elements. They have also been deliberately done to create an illusion of glass or net window slides.

Peeping Toms

Patterns in architecture was the initial thought behind this concept. But while observing such patterns around me, I realized that I was playing the 'Peeping Tom' in the life of people I was seeing.

The normal day-to-day activities taking place in our households are reflected here. The picture shows two people looking at the street action and one woman engrossed in her routine work. The closed window and one slightly open window with curtains flowing outwards are deliberately created to infuse curiosity and suspense.

The feelings of serenity, relaxation and calm within the protagonists are reflected on the joyous backdrop of colourful architecture.

The paradox here is - it is we who are the 'Peeping Toms' observing the activities in the lives of those in the picture. By depicting them as looking into the outward space, the painting shows the characters doing this on our behalf.

Chambers of Thoughts

One evening I was thinking about my next painting when numerous concepts came to my mind.

Finding pattern in an object (like the triangles and squares in a glass window) or object in a pattern (a school of fish searching for their food) were both equally interesting.

I organized them in chambers to club the various thoughts together with a distinctive identity of each.

Besides the two thoughts stated above, other chambers of the painting depict:
- forms of heaped pebbles showing saturation of space
- rolling balls of thoughts/patterns depicting ideas of proximity, division and fall/sink
- indoor and outdoor surroundings that gave birth to the thought.

All together these chambers of thoughts form the exact frame of my mind that evening.

Backache

This is a simple painting depicting an area of human body affected by pain.

The portion marked by various patterns show the inner turmoil of muscles and nerves trying to cope with the constant stress they are under.

It felt quite amusing to assimilate particular patterns to an abstract feeling of 'pain' which although has a physical or concrete existence in our bodies. In a way it was also a form of releasing that feeling from within myself.

The patterns in the background fill the environment with anguish and fatigue.

Fabric of Life

This painting weaves together the various moments of life into a fine fabric depicted in the form of a quilt.

Moving ahead with my new series, I wish to now experiment with patterns in an objective form.

My earlier series which depicted precisely the emotional patterns in and around human form, has gradually evolved and extended to this new concept.

I hope that this attempt will bring a new patterned dimension to my object and also help me in creating some unique compositions with it.

Dreams on Celluloid

Movies are dreams created and projected on celluloid.

The couple watching the movie are enjoying the experience, believing themselves to be the characters in the scenes depicted on screen.

The visuals and emotions that viewers experience while watching films, subconsciously trigger various aspirations in their minds.

Films lead to fantasies and fantasies at times, lead to realities!

Dinner at 'The Aqua'

Here is a couple dining at a restaurant (fictitiously titled 'The Aqua'). They are spending peaceful time with each other, discussing their future.

The aquatic background behind them can be viewed as curtains having aquatic patterns or also as a huge life-size aquarium enhancing the ambience of the restaurant.

The mood of stability and enjoyment is depicted through the subtle moving of various elements in the background. The ongoing thoughts in the couple's mind appear on their respective clothes.

Journey to a New Destination

Here is a couple all set to explore a new destination in an adventurous bag-packing style.

The river dividing the landscape symbolizes the line of threshold. They are here thinking together about taking a step forward and crossing the river, which may take them through lots of difficulties but give them an extended joy to their trip.

This beautiful yet sensitive aspect of joint decision making in a relationship is depicted here.

The Twilight Saga

This painting is inspired from my latest reading experience of the 'The Twilight Saga' written by Stephenie Meyer.

It is a wonderful love story of Edward (a 104-year-old vampire) and Bella (a teenage girl) set in the backdrop of a rain forest in Forks, Washington.

The story takes us through various ups and downs that the couple face in their relationship. From time to time the story emphasizes on the 'concern' of protecting their respective partner from all the problems they face.

This aspect of the story touched and inspired me to paint this abstract feeling of 'concern' that is deeply present in every relationship.

Since they are in love, the patterns of concern on their respective clothing are similar.

Dubai Trilogy

The city of Dubai has inspired me to believe in opportunities, dreams and surprises that life has to offer. This trilogy is a tribute to the wonderful city depicting its significant facets in the backdrop of natural elements – moon, sun and water.

I’ve used Jumeirah Mosque as an icon for Dubai’s centres of academic and religious learning. Here the silver light of the waxing moon is symbolic of illuminating true intelligence, sophistication and beauty.

Two elements radiate across the skyline – visible from every corner of Dubai – the golden sun and the Burj Khalifa. An engineering and artistic marvel, it is unique in its style and grandeur, both in its interiors and exterior.

For centuries, the dhows and blue seas have tested human courage; facilitated scientific and technological development, and promoted enterprise across continents. They have played a pivotal role in making Dubai the global leader that it is today.

Mutual Harmony

This painting is based on my recent experience with music.

Singing is another artistic experience for me after painting. I love the way I get engrossed with the rhythm, melody and notes. To me it means the freedom of mind from worry, anxiety, distraction or annoyance and a way to attain peace.

In this painting I have attempted a different kind of composition where the protagonist and participant are on different planes of foreground and background.

However, the musical notes created in the process of singing seem to capture the entire environment and bind them both together through singing and humming.

Calm in the Cushion

The couple here is happy and content to be with each other, enjoying a feeling of trust and togetherness – that’s the concept of this painting.

It’s an assuring feeling to go to bed at night in the dependable company of your life partner (spouse). A sound relationship gives a person the courage to forget the discomforts of the day gone by, and gives him/her the confidence to fight the obstacles of the next day.

The patterns on their bed are used to bring the feeling of coziness, serenity and the atmosphere of night.

New member in the family

The young couple here is looking forward to 'parenting' a gold fish that they've just bought.

Both are excited about this new member in their family and want to nurture it with their best possible care.

The boy is explaining to the girl the various aspects of a fish's life (food, environment, hygiene, life cycle etc) and the girl is a bit concerned whether she would be able to handle the responsibility competently.

The bubbles coming out of the fish's mouth are used all over the painting in various forms to depict the aspects of the couple's conversation, thought and to create a mystical atmosphere.

Love is in the air...

The present line of thought on my paintings has graduated from the individualistic mould to discovering the various aspects of male-female relationships. And love or romance is undoubtedly the most beautiful feeling of the bonding.

This painting is a simple attempt to bring out the gesture in a lyrical and rhythmic form. The costumes and feel is deliberately created in the old epic style to enhance the delicacy and dreaminess of the subject. The epic tales of Radha-Krishna, Dushyanta-Shakuntala, Nala-Damayanti and many more are the perfect examples of eternal love.

Let's Relax...(2)

Having settled and acquainted with the new phase in life, now is the time to relax and enjoy it. Last year with its economical ups-and-downs and transition of relocating to a new city - was quite anxious and hectic.

Few years back during college, I had done a similar painting titled 'Let's Relax...' after the tiresome month of exams and submissions. During those days my subjects were related to objects and their feelings if they were alive. In that painting I had shown me and my friends in the symbolic form of clothes, relaxing in our college campus.

This painting is a newer version of the same concept, depicting my present figurative style of painting. Here we can now see a couple relaxing beneath a tree, releasing the mental and physical strain in the form of various natural elements.

I have consciously tried to create the mood of an evening, when we usually relax after the long day's work and look forward to enjoy the rest of the day. The time when the sun is about to set, leaving behind many beautiful colours in the sky. This short span of transition from evening to night is very enticing - and I love being out enjoying it everyday.

On the same note, this painting is a source of release of tension, relaxation and motivation to gear-up for the next activity of life.

Rain on the Pane

The recent rains in Dubai inspired me to paint this subject - rains invariably evoke mixed emotions among people.

While some people choose to discover the romance amid the showers; for others, non-stop rains cause frustration due to the flooding and fallen infrastructure.

Here I have tried to depict two different feelings of like and dislike - some fear the dark clouds while some are inspired by the silver linings across the wide skies.

On the one side are memories of the sweet smell of the earth, the advent of the cooling monsoon and the feeling of rejuvenation among the flora and fauna. On the other side are memories of water logging, traumatic traffic jams and destruction of life and property.

Initially I found it difficult to execute this painting. But I loved experimenting with the colours to show the contrast emotions - and hold them together in one painting in the form of rain drops falling on a sliding window - the two characters separated by a mere frame running between the same window.

Garden of Eden - 2

In continuation to my earlier painting, this painting is a thought in series.

The couple who had just discovered themselves in the 'Garden of Eden' are now experiencing the beauty of paradise. Here they are lost together in love with each other.

The heavenly atmosphere, colourful and fragrant flowers, entangling creepers and dreamy fog have taken them in a trance of peace and ecstasy.

Garden of Eden

This painting is an extension of my earlier painting, 'Intimate Conversation'.

Like before, the couple here is spending time together - evolving out of the indoor environment to an outdoor one - coming out of the aquatic blanket (water/pond) to find itself in a blissful 'Garden of Eden'.

The purity of the male-female form always reminds me of 'Adam and Eve'. The good and evil of life is best put in their story.

Likewise in this painting I have tried to depict the various aspects of life of this couple with the background of the Eden's Garden.

Intimate Conversation

This painting is based on an intimate conversation between a couple. They are enjoying their time at night cozily in their bed.

A blanket of aquatic life over them depicts the exchange of thoughts they are immersed in, in the form of fish travelling from one point to another.

The bedspread below with a design of water and bubbles expresses the warm emotions expressed by them. (This can also be interpreted as an intimate couple enjoying a romantic dip in the water together.)

I often identify a particular pattern around people I come across in day to day life. This pattern expresses the kind of feelings or vibes in and around that person.

At times it’s the external visual pattern that stimulates my thought or otherwise the person himself emitting emotions; which later I depict from my mental patterns.

Water, fish, aquatic feel - colours like blue and green entice me - I love to paint them again and again in the best possible way. I foresee that fish will symbolically be a part of my paintings henceforth to show various forms of emotions.

'Natural' beauty

Nature and its elements are among the few subjects that fascinate me as an artist.

This painting depicts a landscape through the face of a girl (click on the painting to view the details closely).

Her hair, forehead, eyes, skin and attire each depict a particular constituent of nature. The texture, pattern and colours come together to create such an effect.

A human face is usually used by artists to express various emotions, but here, I have used it as a means to interpret the beauty of nature through a human form.

Explorer

I took a break from my regular routine and decided to explore Dubai, and the nearby places of visit.

While doing so I handled several maps of roads, private transport and significant places. Along with the actual experience of visiting places, I also enjoyed them showed symbolically on the maps. The wide variety of maps from tourist to local and handmade to ancient(showing the old city) fascinated me.

I thought why not also create my own version of the map of such places.

The green patches represent the oasis (like Al Ain, which is also city also called as the 'Garden City'); other motifs represent the barren lands and vast deserts, mountains of various textures and colours, residential areas and the beautiful coasts that make the UAE so visually spectacular.

The wide roads and cool temperatures made my short trips around the region even more pleasurable.

Pattern of thoughts

This painting is based on the process of meditation, where one tries to set aside the thoughts in mind and achieve peace.

I often take it as an exercise for self-analysis and to understand the subconscious mind better.

Usually, when we start meditating, lot of thoughts rush into our mind instead of leaving it. These thoughts are expressed here in various concentric circles which come from within and gradually grow outwards.

Since my process of thinking and expressing is related to patterns, I have shown these thoughts as small molecules and forms in the circles.

Through the gradual development of the painting and then its completion, I have thoroughly enjoyed bringing out the entire world of patterns that was within me.

In my own zone

There is always a private space in the mind of everyone.

In this space, one has the freedom to think and imagine anything and everything under the sun. It is a kind of a vacuum, where nothing can interrupt a person's thoughts. Many a times I am in my own zone (world) when I'm out for a walk, while I cook, watch television and even at times when someone is talking to me.

Everything around me appears to function as usual - yet I am unaffected - standing in between enjoying my own space.

It's like day dreaming; I feel as if I'm submerged in water (swimming pool, pond, sea) with the aquatic life around me and the bubbles of thought around in my mind.

This creates an interior (inside mind) and exterior (outside world) space, which can be distinguished in this painting.

I have tried to apply the miniature style of painting this time to bring out a delicate and lyrical way of expression which was not intended in the bold interpretations of my earlier paintings.

SO MUCH to think!

Sometimes our mind is caught in a cluster of thoughts - of desires, aspirations, needs etc. These then spread out into branches and sub-branches leading into one's own surrealist world.

I’ve depicted a mind map of such a network of thoughts in this painting.

Human brain is a complex organ capable of retaining enormous memory, in addition to thinking, calculating, reasoning and feeling.

I often wonder about the journey of the mind from one thought to another; and then to some completely different subject not connected with the initial thought. This state of mind is disturbing and at times, funny as well.

And when one tries to control this state by meditating or concentrating on other subject, or trying to empty the mind; it tends to get even more complicated and also generates more related thoughts.

There's SO MUCH to think when one is in this mood - I thought why not paint this network of thoughts as a form of meditation - and release some of them in the process?

Gazing out of the window

The painting shows a woman gazing out of her window. Trees, houses, windows, plants and curtains are some of the elements forming the interior and exterior view of the subject. She is a person attached to her home, and enjoys the atmosphere around her. The space and freedom she experiences here help her to analyze her goals, ambitions, likes and dislikes. And here she is taking a rear view of the past, present and future of her life.

For the first time through this painting, I have made an attempt to bring a characteristic and individuality to the figures I depict. I am in the process of creating a particular style to the figure depictions in my paintings. So far the concept of painting and the style of execution (which have been depicted in linear patterns) was the centre of attention. But this time, the styling of the figure is also the element in focus.

Cityscape

This series of four paintings can be experienced individually or collectively as a group of two or four paintings.

Inspired by the aerial view of Dubai, my cityscape attempts to capture its features: the roads, the roundabouts, the creek-waters, the parks, the sands and the skyscrapers. Add to that its extreme climate – the sweltering heat during the summers and cool winds during the winters, makes living in the city a unique experience.

I have tried to depict some of these architectural and geographical experiences through various patterns of swirls, grids, curves and circles.

The painting has been done in a series of four, keeping in mind the various feelings that the numerous visual combinations will evoke. Placing the paintings next to each other in permutations and combinations will enable the viewers to interpret the visual in their own ways and evoke distinct feelings, thereby enhancing their experience.

Dream

Recently I have started paintings based on the inner sensibilities of women. My journey from portraiture till here has been very exciting. With every new painting, I explore the various emotions of women through my world of patterns.

This painting is of a girl dreaming about the man of her dreams. He seems to have the ideal characteristics of a good physique, looks, attitude & style which afterall everyone finds attractive. She senses him within her, and is trying to experience him physically as if he is around. The grid patterns and circular forms depict the feelings of love and desire.
